How can you shape your home to nurture your heart in this particular season? What you needed ten years ago probably isn’t what you need right now. And today, Jen Robin, founder of the organizational firm Life in Jeneral, is going to help you create a home you love! Jen and Emily talk about the room that gets the most “bang for your organizational buck,” how to tame the spaces where clutter tends to add up, hacks to clean your car, and the most important question to ask yourself before you start making big and small changes to your home.
PS: This episode is not a shame-inducing list of all the things you’re doing wrong in your home. It’s a permission slip to create a home that works the way you need it to, so you can get to love and laughter and the good stuff a little bit faster.
“So how do you get more of the things that matter most? You create space for them. And when it comes to your home, that kind of means we literally make space for them.” – Emily Ley
“Here’s the thing about this episode—this is not going to be a shame-inducing diatribe of all the things you’re doing wrong in your home. It’s a permission slip to create a home that works the way you need it to, in a way that helps you get to love and laughter and the good stuff a little bit faster.” – Emily Ley
“I didn't go to school for psychology, but I've worked with thousands of clients, and all of them come back to the same thing: they just want to be organized so they can have more time in their day, more time with their kids, more time with their friends. They don’t want to feel like they always have a laundry list of to-dos and can’t keep up.” – Jen Robin
“ I want people to make a mess and play in our home. But I also want a system so we can put it back and move on to the next thing.” – Jen Robin
“Look, life is meant to be lived. So let's do the macro and really set you up for success.” – Jen Robin
A Blessing for Your Week
This year, I hope your home brings you the rest you deserve after working so hard.
I hope your home is a place where you can curl up with a cup of tea and a good book,
And have dance parties in the kitchen with your kids,
And eat takeout after the long shifts you have as a makeshift shuttle driver.
I hope your home is a haven from the uncertainty outside your walls
And a balm of connection for all of you inside.
Simplicity Tip of the Week
If you have a drawer that gives you hives every time you open it—especially if it’s a drawer that has a lot of small items floating around in it—I have to tell you something: drawer bins are going to save your life.
I’m not being dramatic here, either. If you do one thing for your home this year, get some drawer bins or drawer dividers. You don’t have to get anything expensive—honestly, any small bins will do here.
