Simplify Your Closets

Welcome to 2022, friends! A fresh start feels good, doesn’t it? One of our favorite things to do this time of year to get that “fresh start” feeling inside our homes is to clean out our closets. But if you’ve got a lot on your plate, don’t worry—you don’t have to do it all in a day! Small steps make big progress, and Emily’s here to show you her tried-and-true method of getting rid of closet clutter. It’s a small but simple way to make room for what matters this year.

Steps to Simplify Your Closets

  1. Make a plan. Don’t feel the need to clear out all your closets at once. Take your time and don’t place the pressure of time on your shoulders.

  2. Designate a “Get out of here!” space. Select a spot in your home with minimal traffic and use that as a collection area for all the items you’re donating.

  3. Get started! Yes, this might be the hardest part of the process, but once you get started and into the flow, you’ll be glad you took the time to declutter.

  4. Decide what to keep. Organize items into categories and place mementos and family heirlooms in memory boxes to keep them extra safe.

Thought-Provoking Quotes

There's nothing wrong with thinking about where you are and where you want to be. It's not harmful to think about how you want your day to run, how you want to set up your house so that it's a place you enjoy coming home to. It's not bad to want to make a few changes. I think where we get lost is when we feel like we have to do these things.” Emily Ley

“Remember that you are making progress little by little. Keep going. All of your efforts will amount to big change.” Emily Ley

A Blessing for Your Week

I hope you have a wild, bright hope for the days ahead, and an armful of loved ones you get to spend them with.

I hope your home is a place of rest and joy, a place where you can let your shoulders down and slip on the warm comfort of being known.

I hope you begin this brand-new year with a truckload of confidence in who you are, and a gentle peace over who you are becoming.

Simplicity Tip of the Week

If you plan to store a hodgepodge of items in your closet, one of the easiest ways to give everything a sense of order is to put your items in storage containers. And listen, you do not have to make this fancy. You could get some baskets from a local shop, or use some shoeboxes or whatever else you have on hand.

If you need to store a bunch of small items in a basket, like a collection of chapsticks or multiple containers of floss, try using Zip-top bags to keep them all in one place instead of rattling around. You can make it fancy later, but that’s not the goal here; the goal is to give you some peace of mind. And when you open up the door to an organized closet, I think that’s exactly how you’ll feel.
