Four Ways to (Actually) Rest During Busy Seasons

The holiday season is here, friends! It’s a season of joy and celebration—and also a schedule that’s a bit more full than usual. The end of the year is always a busy time, and it can be hard to carve a break in the middle of it all. To help you avoid burnout and truly enjoy what the season has to offer, Emily’s got four ideas to help you feel like rest is within your grasp. As she says, “I know it can feel impossible to care for yourself in the middle of a busy season. But just remember: you weren't made to be in a season of doing and striving and trying forever. That's why the world is divided into four seasons, including winter, when the earth rests until it's ready to bloom next spring.

4 Ways to Find Rest When Your Season Is Packed

  1. Say yes to what matters in this season—and let the other balls drop.
  2. Say no to adding more right now.
  3. Listen to your body. Make sure you are nourishing your body in all ways—physically, mentally, and spiritually.
  4. Exercise. It might sound trite, but moving your body helps you “complete the stress cycle” and brings yo back to a place of calm.

Thought-Provoking Quotes

Many of us are finding ourselves in the midst of more busy seasons than ever before. For some of you, your whole life can feel like one busy season rolling into the next one. And it's taking more of a toll on you than you realize. Day in and day out, your body is bathing in neurochemicals, telling your body you're stressed. And if you're not doing anything to combat that stress, you might be on the road to burnout. ” Emily Ley

"Listen to your body. When you're busy and have multiple priorities, you can forget that you're a human being, not a human doing. You're not made to go a million miles an hour all the time. In order for you to do anything, you need to put on your oxygen mask first. You need to take care of yourself.Emily Ley

“I know it can feel impossible to care for yourself in the middle of a busy season. But just remember, you are a human person who has human needs and that is okay. That is real. You weren't made to be in a season of doing and striving and trying forever. That's why the world is divided into four seasons—including winter, when the earth rests until it's ready to bloom next spring.” Emily Ley

 A Blessing for Your Week

In the midst of a maelstrom, may you take some time to care for yourself.

May you move your body in a way that makes you feel good.

And may you find meaning in everything you're doing, and joy in the middle of it.

Simplicity Tip of the Week

Set a reminder on your phone to check in with yourself at regular intervals during this season. Maybe 10 AM, 2 PM, and 6 PM. Maybe you need to remind yourself to eat, or take your vitamins. Maybe at 6 you need to remind yourself to start wrapping up your day soon, if you’re in the middle of a work deadline, or that you need to get up and move your body for a bit. It seems so small and trivial, but having compassion for yourself in this way is one of the kindest things you could do for yourself. When you know that you’re able to care for yourself in the midst of a busy season, that’s one of the most empowering and peace-inducing gifts you could give to yourself.
