Work/Life Balance When Everything Is Crazy

We’ve all been there: you’re getting ready to check out and go on vacation when a kid gets sick, the garbage disposal stops working, the dog swallowed a squeaker, and your boss gave a rush project that’s due, um, yesterday. Sometimes life is a lot, and it’s hard to find that elusive balance we’re all searching for. But this week, Emily gives four doable tips to help you find a bit more calm when life keeps throwing curveballs. (pro tip: take a step back, evaluate what truly needs your attention, and create the space to live with intention and joy, even on the hard days.)4 Tips to Find Balance Each Day

  1. Lean into your season.
Your life is going to change and so are you. The priorities of a college student will not match the priorities of a working mom—and that’s okay!

  2. Learn to say no.
Sometimes saying yes to someone else means you’re saying no to yourself when you just don’t have capacity for that. It’s okay to take stuff off your list and turn down tasks that don’t serve you well in that season.

  3. Create boundaries and stick to them.
You are allowed to admit something isn’t working for you. It may be uncomfortable in the moment, but when you honor your boundaries, you’ll feel so much better in the long run.

  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Needing help does not make you a failure. There are so many people in your life who would love to help you. Getting help from your loved ones and finding some peace? That’s a win-win, sister.
Thought-Provoking Quotes

“You know what makes me feel steady? Knowing what's coming and planning for things. But you know what can be kind of unpredictable? Life. And life is the literal opposite of steadiness. It never stays the same.” – Emily Ley

“Balance is a myth—at least an effortless balance. And this is something I forget a lot. I forget that when I balance things, I'm making a lot of choices and compromises all at once.” – Emily Ley

“Sometimes you need help, especially when life happens. And you're not a failure if you need to ask for help. In fact, I bet there are so many people in your life who would love to help you because they enjoy being helpers, too.” – Emily Ley

A Blessing for Your Week

May you find work that matters to your whole heart so that you can do it wholeheartedly.

May you find the courage to speak the truth of where you are so you can honor that place with your choices and focus.

And no matter how busy your season, may you find the things that bring you the joy you so easily give to others.

Simplicity Tip of the Week

Make a list of helpers. Who do you think you can call when you need help? It can be for something small, like a team member who can take notes for you in a meeting. Or it might be someone you can reach out to when you need to make an emergency call at 3:00 a.m. that no one ever wants to make. Put this list of people in your phone, and hey, you can even offer to be their helper in the future, too. We weren't made to do any of this alone. We need each other, especially when life gets a little bit crazy.
