We live in Burlington, Ontario, Canada in a house with a bright yellow door. I have a Bachelors Degree in Environmental Design from OCAD University and worked as a high volume retail Store Manager for 10 plus years. I have always been a bright color lover and an avid creator. I exist on coffee, fresh flowers, and sunshine.
How do you take care of yourself so that you’re physically and mentally prepared to be your best self for your loved ones?
For me, it’s about listening to my body and abiding by its cues. Living with fibromyalgia, it is important I know my limits and stay within them so I can be present and whole for my family. I make sure to attend my health appointments (like chiropractic, acupuncture etc), take my medication and/or supplements, drink copious amounts of water, and rest when needed. Mentally, it’s ensuring to connect with friends and other makers to share our passion, reading inspiring and motivating books, and getting a good nights sleep. I am an early to bed, early to rise type of gal. I treat myself with ease, but with great rewards to celebrate my wins. My favorite treat is a fresh manicure and pedicure.
What’s your favorite beauty secret?
That would be a tie between:
1. Blinc Mascara Amplified: It applies to your lashes in tubes, and literally comes off in tubes and chunks when saturated in water while washing your face. No more time spent scrubbing off stubborn mascara. But it doesn’t budge if crying or sweating. It has been life-changing (no joke).
2. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream: I use both their daytime and night cream after a light face wash, and my skin has never looked better.
What’s your favorite outfit for a quick, polished look?
A good skinny denim, solid colored t-shirt, and either a long cardigan or blazer. I add a pretty necklace for a bit of sparkle, a pair of ball stud earrings, and pair with a comfy shoe (often my Tieks, or a good ankle boot).
Whats your favorite quick-prep dinner for your family?
Fajitas! Lots of different veggies, chicken or steak, and the best sauce options. Oh, and cheese. Very little prep, very little clean up- lots of taste!
Tell us your favorite Instagram account to follow, and why?
That’s a tough one- There are so many accounts that inspire me on the daily. I would have to say @cylcollective. Grace Gulley curates a feed that has gorgeous imagery. Creative business women and makers share their experiences and learnings. It shares how to consistently challenge yourself and continue to improve, both personally and professionally. With a focus on self-love and balance, it is a community full of support and encouragement.
What tradition or routine is important to you?
My little girl is up early in the morning, and my husband and I are lucky enough to have an hour or so to just relax and spend time with her before he has to get ready for work, and I start getting immersed in my day. We play with toys, eat some fruit and snacks (drink lots of coffee), and generally laze around.
What’s in your purse?
My wallet, cell phone, a classic pair of sunglasses, a makeup bag with WAY too many lip colors, a pack of kleenex, a small notebook and pen for jotting down inspiration, and often a diaper and wipes…one can never be too prepared. Right now I always have snacks in my purse too, being 7.5 months pregnant.
Where do you find your inspiration?
All around! I am a sucker for beautiful floral arrangements, stunning interiors, various textures (both man-made and in nature), and the makers and creators I interact with on a daily basis. My ultimate passion is color, and color combinations, and so I snap these up from all different places in my life and infuse them into my work.
We know you’re a busy lady! How do you balance all of your work responsibilities along with your home and personal life? Any tips for our readers?
I am so lucky to be able to run my business from home, thanks to the dedication of my hard working husband. My family will always come first, and business second. I plan my week ahead of time (using my Gold Pineapple Simplified Planner Daily Edition). I am very careful to book custom work with lots of space in between in order to account for unforeseen circumstances. In between custom work, I allow myself less structured play time for painting and designing. Including my little girl in art-making has helped me to have more time during the day to create while still spending quality time with her. I think it is super important to set realistic and time sensitive goals when balancing business and life. I have learned to say No to things that will stretch me too far. I think it’s important we remember to value down time just as much as “the hustle” or being busy.
What’s your favorite app (or other tool!) for helping you do life?
I have got to be simple here and say my Notes App on my phone. I always have my phone near, so I can jot down ideas briefly and then transfer notes, ideas, etc. either into my work journal or my Simplified Planner once I get back home. I have FAR too many notes saved on my phone.
