I’m so excited that our last tour for Making Things Happen begins on Monday. It’s bittersweet – I’m excited that MTH will begin in a new format in the Spring (one that will allow the three of us to spend more time with our families) but I’ll also miss trecking all over the country with Lara and Gina on one of the greatest adventures of our lives – meeting people ready to make enormous things happen. These people have inspired me for five years now to focus on what matters most. I without a doubt would not be here without them....

iPhone Cases–New for Spring!
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been swooning over the iPhone case designs Emily launched a few weeks ago! So much so that I immediately ordered the Emerald Stripe one for my own phone. ( I’m slightly stripe obsessed! ;)) Since then, as orders have come in and the iPhone cases have arrived in the shop, I literally “Oooh” and “Awww” over each one. Confetti. Color blocking. And, my absolute new favorite, Emerald Debutante Stripe. Oh. My. Goodness! We loved each and every one of these new designs. And, we think you did too. But, well, as much as...
Adventures with my iPhone
Two weeks ago, I did something scary. I removed my email from my iPhone. This was a big deal. I emailed the girls I work with on a daily basis to let them know I was doing it. I told them if anything caught on fire to call me. So far, nothing has caught on fire. AMAZING!! The world didn’t stop spinning when I unplugged a little! When I went on maternity leave early last year, I was SO AFRAID my business would literally fall apart because I would be unplugged for a few months. And it didn’t. Isn’t that...
Our new holiday photo card sets!

Last week Lara and I hosted our first of three webinars as part of our Making Brands Happen Webinar Series. This one was Part One: Setting Yourself Up for Success. For all of you that know about our Simplified Planner, THAT is the point of it. In order to have a simplified life, you must set yourself up for success ten steps in advance. I’m feeling good about all the meal planning, time blocking and date-night planning I’ve been doing but one thing always remained – and that was my addiction to my iPhone. It’s an addiction guys. It’s not...

Simplifying 2018, Part 2: Your Schedule
Does anyone else feel like 2017 was jam-packed?! I know I did. Granted, it felt so much calmer than 2016, but it was still very full. This took a lot of planning and organization on my part, to make #allthethings happen without stressing everyone out (myself included). If you’re like me, though, you’re hoping to a) simplify your schedule for 2018, and b) really get a handle on that simplified schedule (that may still be very busy). Here are three quick tips for kicking off 2018 on the right foot with a schedule and plan that feel great to you....
Our… NEW… SHOP!! And a CONTEST!
It’s open!! Hooray! I’m just tickled to death over the response to our GRAND OPENING last week! The shop has been an enormous success and I’m SO EXCITED about how much you’ve all loved the products! They’re clean and simple with just a dash of sweet, Southern charm. Our most popular products have been our personalized iPhone Cases. These aren’t just any cases. We took extra special care to make them SUPER cute so that you’d be so proud to show off your own customized design that you’d flip that puppy over (CASE UP!) and ignore the screen! Get back to...
Well, here we are. Brady is 8 weeks old. Mom is slightly rested and back into the swing of things. Dad is loving life with his little boy. I must admit, I was terrified to start working again. I was just having too much fun with tummy time, reading stories, going for walks to see ducks and turtle and watching my little man grow. Even though I work from home and I’d prepared in every humanly way possible for the task of being a working mom, I feared losing those precious moments with my little one. It wasn’t easy at...
SIMPLIFIED PART 3: BABIES + BUSINESS
I wish I could write the secret key to balancing the two things I (already) love SO much, but I’m only just beginning this journey as a working, multiple business-owning, passionate, ambitious wife + mama. Really intensely beginning when I started my journey with Lara and Gina on the Making Things Happen tour, I’ve been thinking, list-making, researching, seeking trusted advice and really delving into the idea of doing it ALL. Making it ALL happen. And what have I heard? A lot of women think it’s impossible – to be a loving wife, a good mama and an ambitious business...
An Experiment + A Giveaway
I’m doing something this week that scares me. Why? I’m scared to let people down. I’m scared to NOT be in control. But I’m doing an experiment that scares me… because I KNOW I will feel awesome when I get passed it. I’m deleting my email accounts from my iPhone (gasp!!) So… why ARE we so tethered to our iPhones? No… why am I SO TETHERED TO MY IPHONE? Specifically… my mail app? Answer: My inbox NEEDS me. Those clients need me. Right then. I want to deliver the best client experience EVER (no, really. EVER.) And I do this by being...
And so begins night three of day three of way less dairy, way less meat, no diet coke. Night one of iPhone plugged into the computer in my office to charge, not beckoning from my bedside table. Night three of day three of blog every day (two in one today! what!) Night three of day three of cash only. We go big or go home at the Ley house. so far so good. Hold me accountable and watch this. please and thank you. : ) xo Emily PS: For good measure… a ridiculously cute photo of Bman atop a saddle at Green Cedars...
Southern Weddings, V5
I just about fell over when I first saw these images from the Lilly Pulitzer shoot KT Merry did for Southern Weddings. An amazing team pulled this together for V5 and I was stoked when they asked for one of our strawberry striped desk trays. I want to climb into these photos and LIVE here. So gorgeous!!! If you haven’t seen V5, it’s spectacular. I feel like the cousin of Southern Weddings. Even though I’m not part of their staff, I feel like part of the team a little. Lara is one of my very best friends and business partners. And...

Stay hungry. Stay foolish.
Our world lost an amazing human being today. Anderson Cooper called Steve Jobs the Thomas Edison of our time… the Henry Ford… and the Walt Disney. His commencement speech given at Stanford University has circled it’s way through my Facebook newsfeed numerous times tonight. Sitting here as Brady sleeps, I watched the video quietly on my iPhone. And now I’m blogging from my iPhone. Thanks, Steve. I’m not sure I’ve ever been moved so much by so few words. It wasn’t what Steve Jobs said about impending death or cancer or college that struck me – but what he said...
THE JOY IS IN THE JOURNEY
Today I was looking at my to-do list – you know the one that is seemingly six miles long and includes client work to create, groceries to buy, product development ideas to hash out, play dates to schedule, gifts to purchase, chores to tackle, laundry to fold, boxes to ship, toes to polish and, of course, Halloween costumes to plan and I thought… what on earth. I am forever focusing on where I’m going and how exactly to get to that Point B. All to get to an end point. But oh how much we miss when we live life...
The National Stationery Show
Whew! I feel like I’m still recovering from our week in NYC. Gina, Sarah and I made the trip to New York for our debut at the National Stationery Show. We are SO over the moon about the experience. We learned so much, met a ton of great retailers (MANY of whom will be carrying our line very soon!) and took home the Best New Product award in the Desktop category! Here are a few (ok, a lot) pics from my iPhone and from Ruthie Eileen who was there shooting for Southern Weddings with Nicole Yang (their full recap of...
Dear Bman,Today, you started showing signs of wanting to make your grand app
Dear Bman, Today, you started showing signs of wanting to make your grand appearance. Mommy scurried around trying to get the house ready in case it was “TIME” but so far it looks like you’re going to camp a little longer. Then your Aunt Lara tweeted this: To my beautiful friend @EmilyLey http://bit.ly/igNNtq Love, all of your friends : ). I thought “what could this be…” and tried to look at it on my iPhone (don’t worry, Mommy will get you one of those when you’re big) but couldn’t quite tell. I walked into my office, still dressed in black leggings and...
go, go, GO!
Being a one man show is TOUGH. So rewarding though – to see the direct fruits of your labor. These albums are such a labor of love. They’ve been delayed a thousand times for a thousand reasons – each I’ve learned from. The biggest being the TERRIBLE morning all day sickness that hit me as soon as the NSS was over. I have learned SO much about creating these puppies since creating (in a short span of 4 weeks) the lone album I toted with me to NYC. I plan on writing a detailed series of posts with NSS...
I was telling a good friend this past weekend how, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve started to realize how sensitive I am to noise. Maybe it’s because I have three kids with big personalities (read: three LOUD kids) and I crave quiet time or maybe it’s because our world is getting louder in general? I’ve found myself driving without the radio on when I’m alone. Or working in complete silence (even stopping to turn off a far-off television)... and really enjoying the Headspace app. So yesterday, I made a list of all the noise (good noise: like my little ones...
On the eve of thirty five
Thirty years ago, I was half a year into my first year of school. Mrs. Pearson was my teacher and I blame her for the way I see days-of-the-week and months-of-the-year in individual colors (Wednesdays are yellow, in case you’re wondering). Twenty years ago, I was about to get my learners permit. I had to fake the eye exam because my vision has always been less than stellar. Don’t worry, I see much better now. Ten years ago, I was four days engaged to the funniest, most handsome man I know, anticipating an October wedding. With each decade I anticipated so...
The Simplified Planner App – update!
Creating a planner app has been quite the adventure for us paper gals. With our paper Simplified Planner, we hold it in our hands, make sure the printing is precise and beautiful, check to make sure the binding is strong, drop it on the floor and throw it in our bags to make sure it is sturdy and durable. Technology is different. There are SO many integrations that can happen, different models of phones, different user needs and different types of women using different functionalities. We’ve learned SO much in this two+ year process. I always wondered why there weren’t simple,...

We love Nickel and Suede! 2) TSCookies on Etsy: Mr. Brady Ley’s birthday cookies came from this Etsy shop, and they couldn’t have been more perfect. Great for any occasion! 3) Our March iPhone Wallpaper: Did you know we offer free phone wallpapers for each month of 2016? Make sure to download your new one for March! 4) Overnight Cinnamon Rolls Recipe: We’re dying to try these cinnamon...
Weekly Top Ten: Vol 82
Happy Friday! Here are ten things that brought us a little bit of joy this week: Minty Blue iPhone Case: The prettiest case at a great price point! We love this minty blue accessory for our iPhones. Kids’ Lunch Ideas: If you’re in need of back-to-school lunch ideas, this site is for you! So many fun (and yummy!) options. School Lunch Containers: These containers cost an actual arm and a leg, but in our experience they’ve been worth it. They last forever and make packing lunches a breeze! A Simplified Planner Giveaway: We’ve partnered up with Whitmor Inc. to bring...
BABY MUST HAVES, PART 1
Little Bman is three weeks old. And slightly amazing :) Yes, he keeps me awake at night. And, yes, he cries sometimes and I don’t know what to do… but being a mother… is what I was made to do. It sets my heart on fire. It fills me in a way nothing ever has. Even when I’m exhausted and my hair hasn’t seen a brush in days… I love this little man more than life. So from labor and delivery to now, there are a few items that I absolutely could not live without. And I have to share:...
SIMPLICITY WITH SARAH WATSON
Sarah and I met at Making Things Happen in Atlanta, Georgia. I was there leading the workshop with Lara and Gina. I sat near a fiery red-head from Tampa and we hit it off right away. Sarah’s one of the funniest gals I know and I’m so glad she’s part of our team here at EL. xo, Emily I was born and raised in Orlando, but somehow ended up with a Southern accent. It could be all the sweet tea, or the fact that I was raised on soul food and Southern charm. I’m a fan of the Amen —...
SIMPLICITY: Amanda Paret
Hey there! I’m Amanda. I’m a proud Baylor alum, an interior designer, and owner of amanda k. jewelry, my own line of fine, handmade statement pieces. I’m based in Dallas, Texas, but can often be found in other cities or on an airplane en route somewhere. I love traveling, and am embracing this busy season of life as a chance to explore, learn, and be inspired. Each place I visit provides insight and inspiration that translates into my designs. I’m constantly gathering and storing information on the go, which requires lots of organization! How do you take care of yourself...
Simplified (as if its possible): A Sick Little One
The last week the Ley house has been germ central. Call it… The Ley Family vs RSV. Brady got it first. Then I got it. Then Bryan got it. At least the dog didn’t get it. That’d be a 150lb disaster (no really, Briggs is a bull mastiff). It was a miserable week. This was Brady’s first time being sick ever and my first experience with a sick little one. I think a number of times this week I said all I want is my mama. (Nana, we’ll see you on Friday!) Brady has a little play group that we spend...
Brady’s First Birthday Party: The Invitations
Brady’s first birthday party was so much fun. We decided we wanted it to be sweet and young and classic… so we chose a “Southern Picnic” theme and used bow ties to tie the entire affair together. I worked and worked on his invitations and could NOT for the life of me, create something worthy of his very first birthday (I’m crazy, I know). I knew I wanted them to be tactile, not just a piece of paper. I wanted them to be Southern and sweet and with the personality of a playful little boy. So I emailed my dear friend...
GETTING OVER THE WALL
Over it. Under it. Around it. Through it. There are a lot of ways to get past the “wall” that is inevitable to plant itself in your path every now and then – be it the “lackofenergy” wall or the “humungousproblem” wall or the “overwhelmed” wall. I hit a wall today at about 2pm and it got me thinking about how this happens every few months or so. A few things to realize: Everyone (EVERYONE) hits a wall at one point or another. The wall is never really as big as you think. Today, my wall was the “busybeeisgoingtocrashsomeday” wall....
Kitchen remodel: Inspiration + the awful before shot!
For months, Bryan and I have been dreaming about, planning, researching and drooling over our ideas for our new kitchen. Our house was built in 1991 and we’ve done a LOT to bring it up to date. We love that its a home now but the kitchen was the one room we knew would have to be gutted and completely redone one day. Well, ITS ONE DAY! : ) We found a wonderful contractor, chose cabinets, scoured the granite yard for the perfect slab, chose from a billion knobs and pulls to find just the ones we loved and yesterday,...
Simple Favorites for your Free Printables
If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I’m 1) on modified bed rest until the twins come (yay) and 2) I’ve been having so much fun designing free printables and downloads while glued to this chair! :) Many of you have had questions about at-home printers, pens, binders, etc – so I thought I’d gather them all here to help you organize your free printables! Granted, you don’t really need any of these things to make your free printables work BUT if you’re looking to get fancy, here you go (affiliate links below): 1: Le Pens Multi Colored...
Simplicity Series: Whitney Vass
What’s your favorite beauty secret? I adore IT Cosmetics! The CC cream and Bye Bye Under Eye are seriously the best skin products I’ve tried and they don’t make me break out. Why did it take me so long to find them?! What’s your favorite go-to outfit for a quick polished look? Skinny jeans, my ballet pink Tieks, and a simple sleeveless blouse are my go to! Lately I’ve been stocking up on Kendra Scott statement necklaces to add a touch of sparkle! What’s your favorite quick-prep dinner for your family? Angel hair pasta with meat sauce is my favorite,...
Simplified Life: 2013, Weeks 1, 2 + 3
Hahahahahahahahhahahahahaha. Are you all laughing as hard as I am? ‘Cause that post title is just plain funny. Weeks one and two of 2013 were ANYTHING, ANYTHING but simple around our house. Week three isn’t going to be simple either. And that’s pretty much the point of this series. Life’s never simple. Finding joy and simplicity is about setting yourself up for success and getting ready to roll with the punches. Last week, after working so hard to put together our new entertainment center in our family room, we noticed enormous swelling in our bull mastiff, Briggs’, neck. The next...
Small Business Saturday
This verse has been on my mind all day. Today is Small Business Saturday. And I feel slightly weird “advertising” the shop. It’s really not about $5 off or free shipping or a 20% discount. It’s about spreading the message that GRACE is better than perfection, that it’s okay to allow simple joys and pleasures for ourselves (as busy wives and mamas) and that thoughtful gifts (even the kind you make with scissors and glue) are better than expensive ones. Today was a banner day for our shop. We blew every sales record out of the water. That made me...
The last year of my twenties!
Let’s do this 29!! Today at 1:59am, I turned the big 2-9! Thanks Mom for 17 hours of labor on YOUR birthday (yesterday)! : ) I love this photo above – it’s pretty much how I’d like to spend the last year of my twenties – with a giant smile and lots of laughs (and in a purple sequin dress with fake eyelashes… I’ll forgot those 4 inch heels though). I really want to leave my twenties with an awesome year – one that’s centered and happy and full of growth. One that’s full of all my yes’es and less of...
Weekly Top 10: Vol. 3
Happy Friday! We are loving these ten things this week and think that you will too… 1. Free EL iPhone Wallpapers: We get asked where these are all the time, so we thought we’d make it easy for you! Choose from calendars, quotes, or patterns to customize your phone’s home screen however you like it. 2. Ashlee Proffit’s Aaden Sage Birthday Project: We love Ashlee Proffitt and her sweet family who is celebrating the birth of their precious heavenly baby, Aaden Sage, this week. We would be so grateful if you would join us in supporting her through this project. 3. EL Baby Book:...
Where, oh where, did the little town go?
I know, I know! You all loved the town that used to be in my header here. I loved it too. So much. But over the past few months, I’ve been simplifying life so much, I decided it was time to let go of so many projects, so many ideas and so many “irons in the fire” and just BE. So here we are. Just a pretty pattern (that’ll change from time to time to mimic what’s happening in the shop). You see, I’ve been thinking so much about the concept of SIMPLIFYING. The Simplified Planner isn’t just an awesome...
2018 Simplicity Challenge
The process of simplifying your life is a BIG one. It’s so freeing and exciting and it’s HARD WORK. Our 31 Day Simplicity Challenge features one step for each day that can be completed in 15 minutes or less. Physical clutter = mental clutter, so both of those areas are addressed throughout the challenge. For daily encouragement and extra tips on the process of simplifying, join our Simplified Planner...
ASK EMILY: Vol 1
So, my friend Kate over at The Small Things Blog, has been doing this Q & A post for a while. I LOVE it. And since I get all kinds of random questions from time to time, I thought it might be fun to start something similar here!! Every month or so, I’ll post a call for questions on our Facebook Page and choose the most LIKED questions to answer. Here we go! Is the Simplified App still in the works? You betcha! In fact, it keeps me awake at night :) The app is a TON of work and...
must haves for 2012
2012 is off to a WONDERFUL start. Day One of my new goals went great. We spent the day with our good friends McKay Pittman of Oatmeal Lace Design, her husband and baby boy Beckett (love him!!) You can never go wrong with a day started with a 3.5 mile walk in the sunshine + good wine + yummy food grilled on the Big Green Egg. I started this post last year – my must haves – and never finished it. So voila! And so goes life with an almost-one-year-old (WHAT?!) To start – a Christmas gift from my sweet husband: pineapple...
Preparing for a big year
What makes you feel calm? At home? Alive? For me, its the beach. It’s the messy hair, salty air, sandy feet feeling. My favorite. I’m from Pensacola Beach and I just love it. I’ve started putting more beach photos in my home. It’s a simple thing that makes me feel happy and at home. With January 1 quickly approaching, a lot of us are thinking about how to make next year happier, easier, smoother, less stressful. And while we’re each probably thinking of lofty (and great) resolutions like losing weight, relaxing more, eating healthier, etc. sometimes it’s the smallest five...

Hi Guys! I’m Thuy Bui and I am a mom of two pretty awesome boys and reside in the great state of Oklahoma. I am also the mom behind the blog www.heythuy.com which is a creative lifestyle blog where I share about my life, fun DIY tutorials, and my crafting workshops. I am so the Co-founder of www.mothermanifesto.com which is an online community that provides a safe place for moms to be open, honest and share their hearts without fear of shame, guilt or rejection. How do you take care of yourself so...
A day in the life…
Lara and I have had quite the interesting past few weeks. And for your afternoon laugh… a joint blog post. Lara’s commentary will be in blue. : ) Many people know that Lara and I work together on a daily basis for Making Brands Happen. And a whole lot of other things. We’re a dynamic duo, if I may say so myself – Lara’s quite the big dreamer and I’m the logistics queen. High fives!!! But, what’s even more fun (and wildly entertaining if you ever get to sit in on one of our phone calls) is our daily circus act...
BEING A BUSINESS OWNER ISN’T ALWAYS SUPER-FLY-FABULOUS
Please enjoy the images above. The image on the left is my desk on a typical day – very OCD, very organized, very neat and clean. The image on the right is my desk today – woah. What happened. Please note the Happy Meal cup and Jolly Ranchers. Yea, I’m pregnant. But today, after sitting in my car outside Staples, slobbering all over my iPhone as I cried to my husband about my terrible, horrible, no-good, very-bad day, I realized… being a business owner isn’t always super-fly-fabulous. Sometimes it’s hard. Sometimes it involves working with people who are different than...
