Where to Start When Everything Feels Hard

Welcome to the very first episode of The Simplified Podcast! Throughout the show, Emily will take you by the hand and help you think about some of the pressure points in your life—like overwhelm at home and work and in your relationships—and give you tactical tools to bring more calm and confidence into your days. Emily kicks off her brand-new podcast by laying all the cards on the table and asking: can we dare to build a life we love, even when life throws unimaginable challenges our way? We all worry about our families, and our careers, and our futures in the face of uncertainty, but none of us wants to spend every single day battling the anxiety monster. So how do we move forward when we feel stuck? Where do we start when everything feels hard? Emily walks us through three steps for putting one foot in front of the other so we can step out of the anxiety keeping us frozen and into this brave truth: we may not have control of what happens to us, but we do have a choice about how we respond.  3 Steps to Move Forward When Everything Feels Hard

  1. Take a breath.
  2. Acknowledge there are things about your situation you can't control—but you can control how you respond.
  3. Spend time thinking through your coping mechanisms. See if you can replace anything that isn't serving you with something that can.

A Blessing for Your Week

May you remember who you are and Whose you are, even in the midst of uncertainty, overwhelm, or grief. May you always know that the strength you need to thrive in any circumstance is planted deep within. May you have the confidence and humility to name your vices, your unhealthy coping mechanisms. Naming them releases their grip on us. May you remember you are so deeply loved, and that as we've learned from Ecclesiastes, everything is but a season. May you gift yourself the time and space to fully feel your feelings, to allow the grief, the loss, the fear to wash completely over and off of you. You are whole, you are capable, you are strong. And just like He's done every day since the beginning of time, God will bring the sun up tomorrow with the same enthusiasm He had on that very first day.

Simplicity Tip of the Week

Give yourself the gift of a mini-fresh start. Set a timer on your phone for 10 minutes, and do whatever you need to do to get those 10 minutes alone, uninterrupted, in a quiet place. Get the mess out of your head. Cry journal, brain dump, meditate, catnap. Repeat as you need to calm down and clear your head.
